FAQ about the beginner's course.
Do I need to know how to skate?
No, we will teach you everything! Our beginner's course consists of 10 practices where we will teach you how to skate, fall safely and play. We'll also teach you the rules of the game and game strategy.
I'm afraid I'll fall and hurt myself!
Don't worry! The first thing we'll teach you is to fall safely on your knees and elbows. We won't push you into doing something you're not ready for yet. Take it in your own pace.
Do I need to bring my own gear?
If you have gear of you own. Otherwise, you'll get to borrow gear from us for the course. If you love skating and want to keep practicing with us you'll need to get your own gear. You also have the option of renting from us for the first 6 months. You'll need: a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and skates. We are more than happy to give you advice and guide you when buying your gear. It's a jungle! You can find some tips here.
Can I join even though i don't want to skate or play bouts?
Of course! You can be a skating or non-skating official. Skating officials are often called referees, and they ensure that everyone follows the rules during matches. It’s a great way to be on skates even if you don’t want to play yourself. Non-skating officials (NSOs) manage the timing of the game, track penalties, keep an eye on points, and much more fun stuff. You can also be part of the bench crew during matches or help out during practices!
Who can participate?
As a coach, referee, NSO, or volunteer: Anyone, regardless of age or gender identity.
As a player: People over 16 years old (or who will turn 16 during the current year) who identify as either a woman, trans woman, trans man, or non-binary.
I’m 40, am I too old?
No! We get that question a lot and no one is too old. The absolute majority of people getting started in roller derby does so as adults. The age range in our team is 16-45 years old, but most of us are between 30-40 years old
