Getting your own gear
So, you are curious about roller derby and is looking to get your own gear. This is what you will need:
- Quad roller skates (no inlines!)
- Helmet
- Knee pads
- Elbow pads
- Wrist guards
- Mouth guard
If you have tried out with us you probably skated on a pair of Riedell R3. Those are a good choice for a beginner.
When it comes to helmets the most common brands are S1, TSG or Triple Eight. As long as it's a skater helmet, and multi-impact, you are good to go!
For protective gear, some good brands for derby is 187 Killer pads, TSG and S1. The most important thing is that the knee pads have thick padding.
For mouth guards we recommend Sisu.
Some shops offer package deals for new skaters, here is one from Roller Derby House.
Some websites that sell derby gear:
- Roller Derby House in Germany
- Kahalani in Stockholm
- SkatePro
- You can find second hand gear in the Facebook group "Roller derby-loppis Sweden"
Not all skates and gear sold at Kahalani and SkatePro are approved/appropriate for derby though. Feel free to ask us for any tips and advice when getting your gear.
